The Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland is pleased to announce the awarding of two grants within the framework of its Sefarim: Book Publishing Project. The project is supported by the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund and the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life & Culture. The grants will support the translation into Polish of Nahma Sandrow's Vagabond Stars: A World History of Yiddish Theater (Syracuse University Press, 1996) and the inaugural publication, in English, of Dr. Anna Sommer Schneider's Saving the Remnant of Polish Jewry: Activities of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in Poland 1945-1989.
Sefarim (Hebrew: "books") furthers the mission of the Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland to enrich Jewish life in Poland and connect Jews from around the world with their East European heritage. Through supporting the publication of quality nonfiction works of Polish Jewish interest, both scholarly and popular, the project brings new perspectives on Polish Jewish history, heritage and contemporary Jewish life into the public arena and promotes national discourse.
Sefarim, as opposed to other grant programs that fund completed studies awaiting publication, accepts applications for works-in-progress. Applications are reviewed by a committee chaired by Konstanty Gebert, Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland Scholar-in-Residence, on a rolling basis, with an assessment based on their originality, relevance, and potential contribution to a growing canon of literary works about Polish Jewish life.
